Duration: 14 days

Day 1. Almaty - Tangaly-Tas - Taukumy sands near Kanshengel village
Departure from Almaty in the morning. Two hour stop in the Tamgaly-Tas gorge (petroglyphs; about 150 km). Watching Latrodectus tredecimguttatus. Lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to Taukumy sands by the Topar road (about 10 km). Setting up a camp. Watching scorpions and Solpugida in the dark using an ultraviolet lamp. Sleeping in tents.

Day 2. Taukumy sands - the Alakol Lake (western Balkhash)
Breakfast and walking around the sands. Watching spiders hiding in plant roots and holes. Lunch. In the afternoon, taking down the camp, transfer to the Alakol Lake (western Balkhash, about 150 km), setting up a camp. Watching spiders inhabiting reeds on the coast (Linyphiidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae, Tetragnathidae). Return to the camp, dinner. Watching Lycosidae in the dark using a directed light. Sleeping in tents.

Day 3. The Alakol Lake (western Balkhash) - Khantau mountains
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to arid Khantau mountains (about 100 km). Watching spiders dwelling in rocky dry hills (Theridiidae: Latrodectus, Titanoecidae). Return to the camp for lunch. In the afternoon, walking in the mountains watching spiders living on bushes (Eresidae). Return to the camp and sleeping in tents.

Day 4. Khantau mountains - Flood-plain of the Chu river
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to the Chu river's flood-plain near Ulanbel village (about 250 km). Two hour stop for lunch in Furmanovka village. Arrival in Ulanbel village. Setting up a camp in the Chu's flood-plain. Watching spiders inhabiting reeds on the bank of the river (Linyphiidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae, Tetragnathidae). Return to the camp for dinner. Watching Lycosidae in the dark using a directed light and scorpions and Solpugida with an ultraviolet lamp. Sleeping in tents.

Day 5. Khantau mountains - Flood-plain of the Chu river
Breakfast, taking down the camp and transfer to the Karatau mountains near Chulakkurgan village (about 290 km). Lunch in Suzak village en route. Camping in the Karatau mountains near the Chulakkurgan - Kentau city highway. Watching mountain spiders living in dense grass (Salticidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae). Dinner. Further excursion in the Karatau mountains. Sleeping in tents.

Day 6. Karatau mountains near Chulakkurgan village
Breakfast. Hiking in mountain gorges. Socializing with local shepherds. Lunch. Watching spiders living on mountainsides (Salticidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae). Dinner. Further excursion in the Karatau mountains. Sleeping in tents.

Day 7. Karatau mountains near Chulakkurgan village - gorge of the Shayan river
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to the Shayan river (about 120 km). Setting up a camp near a water reservoir in the Shayan gorge. Lunch. Excursion in the gorge, watching steppe and prewater spiders (Salticidae, Theridiidae, Araneidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae). Dinner. Excursion continued. Sleeping in tents.

Day 8. Shayan gorge - Gorge of the Ulken-Kokbulak river on Boraldaitau ridge
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to the Ulken-Kokbulak gorge on the Boraldaitau ridge (about 130 km). Setting up a camp in the gorge. Lunch. Excursion along the gorge, watching watching steppe and prewater spiders (Salticidae, Theridiidae, Araneidae, Philodromidae, Linyphiidae, Tetragnathidae, Thomisidae). Dinner. Excursion continued. Sleeping in tents.

Day 9. Ulken-Kokbulak Gorge on Boraldaitau ridge - Novonikolaevka village
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to Novonikolaevka village (headquarters of Aksu-Dzhabagly preserve; about 65 km). Lunch and walking in the mountains near Novonikolaevka village. Return to the headquarters. Dinner. Banya (Russian type of sauna). Sleeping in a house.

Day 10 and 11. Aksu-Dzhabagly preserve
Breakfast in the preserve's headquarters. Riding horses to Kshi-Kaindy pass (about 10 km). Stop in a small wooden house. Exploring surroundings for two days. Watching forest and high mountain spiders living in dense grass (Salticidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae), watching rare Gylippus rickmersi. Lunch, dinner, sleep, breakfast and lunch in the wooden house on the pass. In the evening, descend to the preserve's headquarters. Dinner and sleeping in the house.

Day 12. Aksu-Dzhabagly preserve - foothills of the Kyrgyz ridge near Kaindy village
Breakfast at the preserve's headquarters. Transfer to foothills of the Kyrgyz ridge near Kaindy village (about 170 km). Setting up a camp beyond the village. Lunch. In the afternoon, excursion in the gorge, watching steppe and prewater spiders (Salticidae, Theridiidae, Araneidae, Philodromidae, Linyphiidae, Tetragnathidae, Thomisidae). Dinner. Excursion continued. Sleeping in tents.

Day 13. Foothills of the Kyrgyz ridge near Kaindy village - Chu-Ili mountains
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to arid Chu-Ili mountains (about 320 km). Setting up a camp on a pass, beyond Chokpar station. Watching spiders dwelling in rocky dry hills (Theridiidae: Latrodectus, Titanoecidae). Return to the camp for lunch. In the afternoon, further exploring. Watching Lycosidae near the camp in the dark using a directed light and scorpions and Solpugida with an ultraviolet lamp. Return to the camp, sleeping in tents.

Day 14. Chu-Ili mountains - Almaty
Breakfast, taking down the camp, transfer to Almaty (about 200 km). Arrival in Almaty, lunch, rest, tour around the city, transfer to the airport.
